Cornell Theme Park Design Competition 2021

In the spring of 2021 I worked with a team of 3 other mechanical engineers at UT Austin to compete in the annual Cornell Theme Park Design Competition. Our team placed second overall out of over 50 teams from all over the world. We also won two special awards: best innovation plan and best master plan.

Our task was to design a themed land to fit inside a small area given to us that was inside a theme park. We had to provide 5 deliverables: a concept plan detailing the theme and story of our land, a master plan containing a map with the layout of our land, an innovation plan describing how we would use technology to make our land unique, interactive, and queueless, a water attraction, and a flat ride. Our themed land, Illustratia, came our of our desire to create a land where guests would be able to interact with and change the land itself in a way that could turn into a game with various levels of potential engagement to fit different audiences.

My group worked collaboratively on much of the project, particularly on idea development. Much of my work was centered around writing our pitch documents as well as creating concept art for our two attractions (I am decidedly not an artist, but with a short time table to complete so many deliverables I had no choice!). I really enjoyed developing unique ideas for the storyline, layout, and interactive elements of our land. I also enjoyed learning new software for the project, including Canva, Autodesk Sketchbook, and SketchUp.
